Cardinals Overcome Slow Start to Down Bellarmine, 63-47

The William Jewell women's basketball team battled through an opening quarter that saw them shooting just 23% to outscore Bellarmine 53-30 the rest of the way on their way to a 63-47 win. The Cardinals improve to 9-12 overall and 5-8 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. 

How It Happened
  • Both teams came out cold as the game remained scoreless for over two minutes until Rhyann Fisher's two free throws broke the ice. From there the Knights went on a 15-5 run to open up an eight point lead. 
  • The Cardinals used a 13-6 second quarter to tie the game at 23 at the half. 
  • After Bellarmine retook the lead early in the third period, the Cardinals forced five turnovers and took a three point lead into the final frame after a layup by Lea Finn
  • Jewell's offense kicked it up a notch in the fourth quarter, outscoring Bellarmine 25-12, and expanding their lead to as high as the final of 16 points. The Cardinals got contributions from all over as five players scored in the quarter, led by Ainsley Tolson's 11. 

For the Cardinals   
  • Tolson led Jewell with 19 points while Claire Burch added 11. 
  • Kiara Bradley finished with 10 rebounds while Fisher grabbed six steals. 
  • After shooting just 27% in the opening half, the Cardinals connected on 52% in the final two quarters. 

For the Knights
  • The Knights did not finish with any players in double figures but were led by Bailey Harney's eight. 
  • Bellarmine was held to just 4-of-17 from three point land for 24% after entering the game shooting nearly 10 percentage points higher.
