The William Jewell baseball team opened the 2020 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule on Saturday as they took on Lewis University in a doubleheader. The Cardinal rallied to take the opener, 9-8, but dropped the nightcap, 12-8 to move to 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in league action.
Game One: 9-8, W
How it Happened
- The Cardinals got off to a hot start as Jade Smoot sent a two out double down the right field line scoring Anthony Hansen and Nick Modrcin for the early lead.
- The Flyers responded in the second frame, cutting the lead in half with one run on two hits, before tying the game at two in the fourth.
- Lewis looked as though they were breaking the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits to grab a four-run lead. Jewell immediately rallied, plating three runs on three hits and a Flyer error to pull within one in the bottom of the inning.
- Lewis added a run in the seventh to pull ahead by two but after an error allowed Hansen to score and pull the Cardinals back within one, Smoot again came up with the big two-RBI double to put Jewell back on top. Ben Pautler added an RBI sacrifice bunt to push the lead to two.
- The Flyers got pulled back within one with a sac fly in the eighth but Nyk Yaquab shut the door in the ninth.
Game Two: 12-8, L
How it Happened
- Lewis wasted no time in game two, scoring four runs on five hits in the opening frame. Back-to-back doubles by Hansen and Cameron Fliege put Jewell's first run on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
- The Flyers added one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to extend the lead to five.
- The Cardinals again rallied in the fifth inning as Hansen scored Zach Urso on a sac fly, before Nick Modrcin blasted a three-run home run to right field to pull Jewell within one.
- In the following frame, Christian Chalabi put the Cardinals on top for the first time in the game with a two-run blast of his own.
- Lewis retook the lead in the seven on a two run home run but Pautler singled in the bottom half to score Modrcin to tie the game.
- The Flyers scored one unearned run in the eighth, and three in the ninth to bring the score to the final of 12-8.
For the Cardinals
- Chalabi and Hansen each finished with three hits and three runs.
- Smoot finished with five RBI while Modrcin scored four times.
- Reed Pegram (1-0) earned the win in the opener, going three innings while Yaquab (2) earned the save, after not allowing a baserunner in the ninth.
- Garrison Fields (1-2) suffered the loss in the nightcap, working 3.2 innings with three hits.
For the Flyers
- Anthony Rios had six hits on the day to lead Lewis while Ryan Schefske and Julian Everett had three RBI.
- Jake Lotz (0-1) took the loss in the opening game, allowing four runs on three hits and did not record an out but turned around and earned the save (3) in game two. Ryan Ward (1-0) got the win in the nightcap, working two innings in relief.
