ROLLA, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team got three shots off in the final seven seconds including a contested layup at the buzzer but fell just short, 68-66, on Saturday evening at Missouri S&T to drop to 1-8 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both the Cardinals and Missouri S&T came out of the gates fairly equally with neither taking more than a four point lead through the first 10 minutes. Tied at 17, Jewell got a free throw from Grant Stubbs and back-to-back buckets from Eysan Wiley to go on top by five. The Cardinals maintained a slight advantage for the next five minutes before the Miners retook the lead, 28-27. Mason Alexander quickly responded with a three but Missouri S&T finished the half with consecutive layups to hold a four point lead at the intermission.
- Alexander caught fire in the second half, scoring 14 points over the first 14 minutes of the period to push Jewell in front and keep them there for much of the half. After trailing by four late, John Zimmerman hit a triple to put the Cardinals back on top but the Miners retook the lead for good just 20 seconds later.
- Missouri S&T hit a jump shot with 19 seconds on the clock to go up by five, looking to ice the game but Alexander hit his fifth three of the day to pull Jewell within two with under 10 seconds to play. The Cardinals were forced to foul and Missouri S&T missed the front end of a 1-and-1 attempt to give Jewell a chance with seven ticks on the clock. Wiley missed a three that would have won it for Jewell but the Cardinals got two offensive rebounds and put-back attempts, including one as the buzzer sounded but it rolled off the right side of the rim allowing the Miners to escape with the win.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Alexander paced the Cardinals offensively with 20 points, on 6-of-14 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from long range.
- Wiley posted his 22nd career double-double, and his first of the season, with 17 points and 11 rebounds, to go with four assists.
- Zimmerman, who earned his first start of the year, added a career-high 11 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes.
- Jewell shot 41% from the field and 40% from three but connected on just 8-of-18 free throws.
- The Cardinals outrebounded the Miners 44-34.
FOR THE MINERS
- Missouri S&T was led by Mitch Fairless' 20 points and five assists while Kevin Legardy had a game-high 12 rebounds.
