Maryville Uses Big Second Half to Down Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team dropped a 58-51 decision to Maryville on Thursday evening. The Cardinals fall to 1-10 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Not much happened in the opening half, for either team, with just three total points scored through the first six and half minutes. A three from Mason Alexander with just under four to play in the half made it a four point lead for the Cardinals but Maryville responded by outscoring Jewell 6-2 over the final minutes to make it a 16-16 game at the intermission.
  • Things started much more quickly in the second half as Jewell started with a 15-9 run to open a six point advantage with 12:39 to play, nearly doubling their point total from the entire first half. The Saints got back-to-back three pointers to quickly close the gap on their way to a 20-3 run to jump out to an 11 point lead. A three from Carter Olsen, pulled Jewell within six with under a minute on the clock just the Cardinals could get no closer.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Grant Stubbs posted his third double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds, along with two blocks.
  • For the second straight game, Trey Shannon came off the bench to score 11 points, on 3-of-6 from three, as the Jewell bench outscored their counterpart 19-3. Alexander also chipped in 10 points.
  • Along with Stubbs, Jevaughn Ferguson was strong on the glass for the Cardinals with a career high 10 rebounds, eight of which came in the first half. The duo combined for 10 offensive boards.

FOR THE SAINTS
  • The Saints got a game-high 18 points from Owen Long. Ari Jackson and Kamto Eze also finished in double-figures with 12 and 11 respectively.
