LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team got off to a hot start on Sunday afternoon, leading by as many as 11 in the first half, but could not sustain it, falling 65-52 to Missouri-St. Louis. The Cardinals drop to 1-4 while the Tritons, who are receiving votes in the national poll, improve to 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leading by one midway through the first half, the Cardinals went on a quick 6-0 run, sparked by a steal from Grant Stubbs which led to a Kobe McKinley layup and capped by a three from Robbie Hanson to expand their lead to 29-22. After a bucket from UMSL, the Cardinals bot back-to-back triples from Carter Olsen and Jackson Golightly to grab their largest lead of the day at 11 with just under two minutes to go in the opening half. The Tritons got two layups over the final minutes, including one by Jose Grubbs as the buzzer sounded to make it a seven point game at the break, 35-28.
- UMSL came out of the break and quickly cut the lead to just one but a free throw by Stubbs and a three from Mason Alexander pushed the Cardinal advantage back to five, just under five minutes in. The Tritons followed with a 18-6 run over the next seven minutes, to go from down five to up seven at 52-45. Jewell was able to cut the deficit to just four with five minutes remaining but UMSL hit key shots down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- After missing the previous two games, Eysan Wiley led the Cardinals in his return with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. The senior also added three blocks to surpass Chad Jones (1993-97) for second all-time on the career list with 141 rejections.
- Jewell shot 50% in the opening half but was held to just 24% in the second half, being outscored 37-17.
FOR THE TRITONS
- UMSL placed four players in double figures, led by Steve Webb's 18 points. Webb also added 11 rebounds, four assists and six steals.
- The Tritons won the paint, outscoring Jewell 42-26 while pulling down 11 offensive rebounds for 12 points.
