Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cardinals Push No. 13 Truman to the Wire

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team challenged the No. 13 ranked team in the nation on Wednesday evening, battling until the very end, but falling 82-77. The loss drops the Cardinals to 1-5 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams started the game at a blistering pace, combining for 42 points in the first eight minutes with the Cardinals shooting 58% while Truman was hitting on a 79% clip. The Bulldogs followed with a quick 10-0 run to open up a 10 point lead before a three from Mason Alexander ended the drought. Another triple, this time by Jordan Jermain, just before the break, pulled the Cardinals within five at the half.
  • Jewell wasted no time tying the game early in the second half, starting the period on a 9-4 run, capped by a three from Jackson Golightly to knot things up at 43. The Bulldogs went on a 20-6 run over a span of four minutes in the second half to grow a 15 point lead and looked as though they would put the game away but Jewell had other plans. The Cardinals followed with a 19-5 run over their own to pull within two with under a minute remaining after a free throw by Alexander. An untimely turnover forced the Cardinals to foul down the stretch where Truman put the game away, 82-77.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Four Cardinals finished in double figures, led by Eysan Wiley's 23, on 10-of-17 shooting. Alexander added 21 and Golightly 10 while Jermain had a career-best 10 points off the bench.
  • Jewell shot a season-best 48% from the floor  and 36% from three.
  • With both teams shooting well, there weren't many rebounds to be had but the Cardinals did win the battle on the glass, 26-21, including seven offensive boards leading to 10 points.

FOR THE BULLDOGS
  • Truman also put four in double figures, led by Turner Scott, Cade McKnight and Alex McQuinn who all had 15.
  • The Bulldogs shot an impressive 67% from the floor and 42% from three and did not miss a shot for the first seven-plus minutes of the second half.
