BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball faced their third straight opponent receiving votes in the national polls on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Southwest Baptist. The Cardinals pushed the Bearcats to the brink once again, but fell late, 74-62 to drop to 1-6 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals never trailed in the first half building a lead as large as nine. Jewell used a 8-0 run, led by five points from Eysan Wiley, to open a 24-15 advantage. Southwest Baptist responded by closing the half on a 16-8 run to pull within one, 32-31, at the half.
- The Bearcats opened the half on another run, 12-5 to take a six point lead just five minutes into the period. Midway through the half, Jewell went from down six to up five after a 11-0 run, capped by two free throws from John Zimmerman. SBU rallied late, outscoring the Cardinals 25-3 over the final six minutes to escape with the win, 74-62.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Wiley, who played all 40 minutes for the first time this season, scored a game-high 23 points to go with six rebounds and three assists.
- Sophomore Jevaughn Ferguson posted a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes.
- The Cardinals grabbed seven offensive rebounds leading to 11 second chance points while committing a season-low seven turnovers.
FOR THE BEARCATS
- Southwest Baptist had four players in double figures, led by Mitch Ganote's 20 points and five assists.
- The Bearcats shot 45.6% from the floor but were held to just 19% from three.

Jewell is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Drury. The women's game has been postponed due to COVID-19 which has moved the men's start time up to 6:05 p.m.
