Comeback Bid Falls Short at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team rallied late in the fourth quarter but came up just short at Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon, falling 66-60. The Cardinals drop to 3-6 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied 9-9 early, Southwest Baptist went on a 7-0 run over two minutes. A layup by Libby Arnold pulled the Cardinals back within three but the Bearcats expanded their lead back to seven at the end of the first period.
  • Jewell opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 22. The two teams traded baskets for much of the period but two free throws just before the half, gave the Bearcats the 35-33 lead at the intermission.
  • The Cardinals took their first lead since early in the first quarter with 7:31 to play in the third frame after a layup from Claire Burch but the lead did not last long. SBU retook a four point advantage late in the period but a jump shot from Ainsley Tolson just before the buzzer made it a two point game after three.
  • The Bearcats pushed their lead to seven with just four minutes to play. Back-to-back three pointers from Tolson brought the Cardinals within three but SBU's Kyleigh Vaught hit a jumper and two free throws down the stretch to push the Bearcats to the win.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Tolson posted her second 20 point game of the month, tying her career high.
  • Kiara Bradley posted yet another double-double, her fifth of the season, with 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists.
  • Claire Burch added 10 rebounds.

FOR THE BEARCATS
  • Three Bearcats finished in double figures led by Sydney Bandy's 16 points.
