Cardinals Sweep Lake Superior on Final Day of Crossover

ROLLA, Mo. – The William Jewell volleyball team swept Lake Superior State to split the final day of the Midwest Region Crossover. The win improves the Cardinals to 7-14 on the season.

Vs. Tiffin (3-2, L)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell opened the day with a tough five loss to Tiffin University. In the opening set, Jewell grabbed an 18-15 lead, but the Dragons came storming back, outscoring the Cards 10-3 the rest of the way to win 25-21.
  • Set two saw Jewell again gain the early advantage, this time, 13-9, behind two kills apiece from Katy Garrison and Chloe Robison. Tiffin rallied and tied the set at 17 but Robison posted three more kills and two blocks to keep the Dragons at bay, 25-21.
  • Jewell dominated much of the third set, leading by as many as eight. A late run, led by four kills from Grace Bacaum secured the set and gave the Cards a 2-1 lead.
  • Set four was all Tiffin as the Dragons ran away with a 25-12 win to force the fifth set.
  • It looked as if Tiffin would ease their way to the win, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in the finale but the Cardinals rallied with five straight points to take a 6-5 lead. The Dragons responded with three consecutive points of their own and held on late to win 15-12.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Bella LaPorta finished with a season-best 15 kills while Garrison had 13 and Baucom 10.
  • Robison finished with a season-high nine blocks to go with eight kills
  • Hannah Cope dished out a career-high 53 assists.
  • Three defensive specialists finished in double digits as Haidan Baade had 26 digs, Jordan Collard 18 and Kaci Behrens 14.

Vs. Lake Superior St. (3-0, W)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening set of the weekend finale was a back-and-forth affair as Jewell held an early lead only to see the Lakers pull within three late. A big block from Robison and Garrison shut the door, however, 25-21.
  • Leading by one in the second set, the Cardinals went on a 7-1 run to open a seven-point advantage and hold off LSSU the rest of the way, 25-17.
  • After trading points early in the third, Jewell took advantage of multiple Laker miscues to go on a 15-4 run to open a 10-point lead. LSSU scored twice late but Katie Paine ended the set and the match with a kill.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Baade picked up 21 digs in the three-set match while Cope had a double-double with 12 digs and 28 assists to go with two aces.
  • Garrison led the offense with 13 kills while Paine and LaPorta had eight each.
  • Robison was again a force at the net, posting six blocks.
