ROLLA, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team attempted to put together a late rally and force a fifth set on Saturday at Missouri S&T but the Miners held off the Cardinals to win 3-1. The loss drops Jewell to 5-10 on the year, 0-6 in the GLVC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The day didn't start well for the Cardinals as S&T jumped out to a 14-6 lead early in set one. Jewell got three straight kills from Anna Godfredsen to pull within seven but it was too little, too late as the Miners closed the set, 25-16.
- Missouri S&T again grabbed a double digit lead in set two, winning 25-14.
- In set three, it was the Cardinals who grabbed the early momentum, opening with an 11-4 lead behind three early blocks. Another run, this time 6-1, behind four kills from Godfredsen, put Jewell up 22-11 before the Miners mounted a rally, pulling with three but a service error gave Jewell the set to avoid the sweep.
- After Missouri S&T opened the fourth frame with a 12-4 advantage, the Cardinals responded, going on an 11-3 run to the tie set at 15. The Miners went ahead 20-18 but back-to-back kills by Lily Johnson and Tatum Ernt put the Cardinals back in front 22-20. Jewell and S&T each held set point twice before a Cardinal error ended the match.
