KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team opened the 2021-2022 season at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover, hosted by Rockhurst, on Friday night. The Cardinals made big shots down the stretch to hold off Purdue Northwest for a 76-71 win. Jewell is now 3-0 in season openers under

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals got off to a hot start, jumping out to an early 14-6 lead after a bucket from Heri Tshiyoyo.
- After a 6-0 spurt from Purdue Northwest, the Cardinals followed with a 10-3 run of their own capped by a triple from Jordan Jermain in transition to go on top by nine midway through the opening half.
- Jewell expanded their lead to 12 before the Pride rallied, outscoring the Cardinals 15-6 over the final seven minutes to make it a 37-34 Jewell lead at the break.
- Purdue Northwest came out of the intermission with the hot hand, going from down three to up five in the first seven minutes.
- Tied at 67 with just over three minutes to play, Tshiyoyo got a steal and layup to put Jewell on top for good. The Cardinals went 7-for-8 from the free line over the final minutes to seal the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- In his first game as a Cardinal, Tshiyoyo led the squad with 22 points, while Kobe McKinley put in 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
- Jermain added 16 points on 4-of-6 from three to go with five assists.
- Jewell pulled down 16 offense boards, led by five from Jevaughn Ferguson, which they converted to 18 second chance points.
- The Cardinals forced PNW into 23 turnovers leading to 20 points.
