Cardinals Push Rockhurst to the Brink in Five Set Loss

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team started hot and rallied late to force Rockhurst into five sets but fell 15-13 in the final set to drop to 7-19 on the season, 2-15 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started strong, winning the opening set 25-18. Tied at 12, the Cardinals went on an 8-3 run, led by two kills from Anna Godfredsen to open up a 20-15 lead. Rockhurst scored three of the next five points to pull within four but two kills and a block from Lily Johnson and Katy Garrison sealed the set. 
  • With the Cardinals leading 7-4 early in set two, Rockhurst went on a 19-8 run to open up a 23-15 advantage. Jewell scored four straight behind two kills and a block by Bella LaPorta to get within 23-19 but the Hawks got the final two points to win 25-19. 
  • Tied at 12 in set three, Rockhurst outscored Jewell 13-6 over the remainder of the set to win 25-18. 
  • The Cardinals dominated the fourth set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. The Hawks got as close as 14-11 before Jewell scored eight consecutive points behind Samantha Thompson's serve, including three aces from the freshman, to break opn an 11 point advantage. Jewell hit .520 as a team with 15 kills in the set, winning 25-12. 
  • Rockhurst started set five with an 11-6 advantage seemingly on their way to an easy win but the Cardinals rallied, scoring five straight to tie the set at 11 after a service ace by Hannah Cope. Jewell took the lead, 13-12, after a kill and block by Johnson but Rockhurst rallied once more scoring the final three points to take the set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • LaPorta led the Cardinals with her second straight double-double, posting a career-high 19 kills to go with 18 digs. 
  • Thompson finished with a team-high 28 assists while recording five service aces, the most by a Cardinal since 2015. 
  • Godfredsen added 15 kills and six blocks while Johnson had nine and eight, respectively.
