Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. - For the third straight match the William Jewell volleyball team took their opponent to five sets but fell 3-2 to Missouri S&T on Friday night in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals drop to 7-20 on the season, 1-14 in the GLVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set was back-and-forth early until the Cardinals used a 4-0 spurt, behind kills from three players, to open a 19-15 lead. The Miners got back within one, 22-21 before making three errors to give Jewell the set, 25-22.
- S&T jumped out on top in set two, leading by as many as 10 before the Cardinals mounted a furious rally. Behind Lily Johnson's serve, the Cardinals got two kills from Bella LaPorta and another by Grace Baucom to pull within 24-19, staving off five set points. The Miners took advantage of an attack error following a timeout to take the set, 25-19.
- With Jewell leading 15-12 midway through the third S&T scored four straight to go back in front. The Miners held the lead until 22-19 when the Cardinals rolled off six consecutive points, led by two kills and a block from Johnson to earn the come-from-behind 25-22 win.
- Set four was another tight one, tied at 22 late after a 3-0 run by the Cardinals. Missouri S&T got a kill and ace from Abigail Widiker and a block from Hannah Merjil to force the deciding set, 25-22.
- The Miners burst out of the gates in set five with a 12-7 advantage. Two kills from Katy Garrison got Jewell back within three but back-to-back kills by S&T finished the set 15-10 in favor of the Miners.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta posted her third consecutive double-double with 16 kills and 17 digs while Garrison added 11 kills.
- Johnson finished with a team-high six blocks and two aces as Jewell out-blocked the Miners 9-6.
- Harper Auman dished out a career-high 28 assists as Samantha Thompson added 20.
- Haidan Baade matched the game-high with 19 digs while Jordan Collard had 14.
