EMPORIA, Kan. - The William Jewell men's basketball team suffered a 78-71 loss at the hands of Emporia State on Saturday. The Cardinals, who fall to 2-2, held the lead at the break but the Hornets scored 43 points in the second period to escape with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After falling behind by six early, Jewell used a 13-3 run, led by six points from Trey Shannon to open up a 15-8 lead. Jewell maintained the lead for much of the first half, until back-to-back buckets by Jamah'ri Turner with just over five minutes to play gave the Hornets the lead, 31-27. The Cardinals closed the half on a 12-4 run, capped by a jumper from Mason Alexander at the buzzer to go the locker room leading 39-35.
- Jewell expanded their advantage to six with under 14 minutes to play after a dunk from Kobe McKinley but Emporia followed with a 18-10 run to go from down six to up eight in a span of nine minutes. The Cardinals weren't done yet, however, as a traditional three-point play by McKinley got Jewell back within one, 68-67, but that was as close as the Cards would get, falling 78-71.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Alexander and McKinley each finished with 18 points, a new career high for the latter.
- Heri Tshiyoyo pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, as Jewell won the battle on the glass, 34-30.
