LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team played their fourth five-set match in the last seven days, falling 3-2 to Drury on Senior Day. Jewell drops to 7-21 on the season, 1-15 in the GLVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drury jumped on top quickly in the opening set with a 12-6 lead early. The Cardinals rallied with a 8-1 run behind two kills from Katy Garrison to go on top 21-19. The Panthers got within one, but a Lily Johnson kill ended the set, 25-22.
- Set two saw the Panthers again break out to a large advantage, up 17-11 midway through. Two kills from Johnson got the Cards back within four but Drury closed the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-17.
- Drury took another early lead in the third set, 6-1, forcing an early timeout from Carolyn Beck. Later on, down 15-18, used a 9-3 run, behind two kills each from Paityn Hardison and Tatum Ernt, to pull within one, 18-17. The Panthers outscored Jewell down the stretch 7-3 to take the set 25-20.
- Set four was back-and-forth in the early going until the Cardinals got two kills and a block from Garrison to aid in a 6-0 run to push out in front by seven. The teams split the final six points to give Jewell the 25-18 win and force set five for the fourth straight match.
- Drury broke out to a 10-5 lead in the finale and the Cardinals could not recover, getting as close as 10-7, before the Panthers finished the set with five of the final eight points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Three Cardinals finished with double-digit digs led by Garrison's 13 while Johnson and Bella LaPorta had 11 each.
- LaPorta posted her fourth straight double-double with a team-high 17 digs. Jordan Collard added 13 while Haidan Baade had 12.
- Harper Auman dished out 26 assists while Ernt finished with a match-high five blocks.
UP NEXT
Jewell will have three games in the final week of the season, beginning with a non-conference trip to Emporia State. The Cardinals will travel to Springfield, Missouri for a rematch with Drury on Friday.
