EMPORIA, Kan. - The William Jewell volleyball team snapped a seven game skid on Tuesday with a 3-0 non-conference sweep of Emporia State. The Cardinals improve to 8-21 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Tied at 12 in the opener, the Cardinals went on a 6-1 run behind Samantha Thompson's serve to pull in front 18-13. ESU rallied and pulled within two, but Jewell took advantage of back-to-back blocks by Lily Johnson and Anna Godfredsen to shut the comeback down and win 25-21. 
• Set two was a tight one as Emporia State held a one point advantage late, 19-18, but the Cardinals got two kills from Johnson and another from Grace Baucom, to take the final seven points and win 25-19. 
• Set three was all Cardinals as Jewell jumped out to 13-3 lead behind three kills each from Garrison and Godfredsen and two aces by Bella LaPorta. The Hornets scored three straight midway through but the Cardinals regained the momentum and finished on a 9-1 run, capped by two aces from Katie Paine, to win 25-11 and earn the sweep.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• The Cardinals hit .258 as a team, led by Garrison's 12 kills. 
• Jewell posted eight aces, led by LaPorta's career-high four while Paine and Thompson each added two. 
• Johnson posted a match-high five blocks while Thompson led with 22 assists. 

UP NEXT
Jewell will close out the 2021 season this weekend with a trip to Drury on Friday followed by a stop at Southwest Baptist on Saturday.
