Baade Sets Single Match Digs Record

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team battled through 10 sets of play over the course of five hours with merely 20 minutes of rest on Saturday at the tri-match hosted by Maryville University. The Cardinals ultimately fell in five sets, twice, first to No. 13 Southern Indiana and then to those hosts.

Game One
Jewell 2, #13 Southern Indiana 3
25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 9-15

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 17-12 in the opener, Jewell rallied, going on a 11-6 run, caped by two aces from Hannah Cope to tie the set at 23. Back-to-back kills by Maddie Wingert completed the comeback to take the opener 25-23.
  • In set two, it was the Cardinals who jumped out to the big lead, leading by as many as 10 late in the set on their way to a 25-18 win to go on top 2-0 on the No. 13 ranked team in the nation.
  • Southern Indiana did not go quietly breaking away to a 17-8 lead in the third set. The Cardinals used three kills from Wingert and two by Grace Baucom to eventually get back within four, 21-17 but the Eagles won four of the final five points.
  • Jewell looked as though they would put the match away, leading 22-18 after a USI error. However the Eagles got three kills from Taylor Litteken, combined with three Jewell errors to sneak back in and take the set 25-23 to force the finale.
  • Trailing 9-7, USI scored eight straight points to take the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.

Jewell 2, Maryville 3
25-19, 25-20, 28-30, 17-25, 9-15

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the opening set of the nightcap, taking advantage of five Maryville errors. The Saints eventually pulled with five at 24-19 but another error gave the Cardinals the set.
  • Leading 13-12 in the set set, Jewell went on a 6-1 run behind two kills from Wingert to go on top 19-13 and took the set 25-20.
  • Set three was a momentum changer as the Saints held the early advantage, 6-1, only to see the Cardinals rally and tie the set at 15 before two service aces by Katie Paine made ia 19-16 Jewell lead. After a kill by Wingert gave the Cardinals match point, Maryville staved off three straight to take a 25-24 lead. The set was tied at four more times before the Saints were able to string together three points and win 30-28.
  • Jewell fell behind 21-14 in the fourth and never recovered, falling 25-17.
  • After Maryville took a quick 7-3 lead, the Cardinals pulled within 10-8 after a block from Elizabeth Quinn and Haleigh Borich but the Saints scored five of the final six points to earn the comeback win.
