ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team pushed No. 6 Lindenwood to the brink but dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Friday on the road to fall to 1-3 on the year.
GAME ONE
Jewell 1, #6 Lindenwood 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lindenwood got on the board first in the second inning, taking advantage two walks and a wild pitch to plate two runs.
- Jewell cut the deficit in half in the following half inning as Chase Elias singled to left center, swiped second and scored on an RBI groundout by Alex Epp.
- The Lions added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Bryce Beckmann.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell outhit the Lions 7-2, with seven different Cardinals posting one hit, including Ben Click with a double.
- Thomas Hennelly (0-1) took the loss, working seven innings, allowing three runs earned.
FOR THE LIONS
- Lindenwood got only two hits, by Beckmann and Mitchell Krebs but worked eight walks.
- Kyle Hentis (2-0) worked 8.2 innings, striking out six to earn the win.
GAME TWO
Jewell 5, #6 Lindenwood 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell took control early, scoring two runs on four hits in the top of the first. Cameron Fliege plated the first run on an RBI single to center before Nick Modrcin doubled down the right field line to score Anthony Hansen.
- The Cardinals added a run in the following inning after Jake Wilcox singled up the middle and came around to score on a double by Hansen.
- Lindenwood got on the board in the fifth with a run on three hits and a Cardinal error before pulling within one in the following frame.
- Jade Smoot led off the eighth inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a Lion error. The senior scored on an RBI groundout by Elias to push the Cardinal lead back to two, 5-3.
- Lindenwood rallied in their final two at bats, scoring two runs on four hits in the eighth to tie things up at five. In the ninth, Jack Lochner led off with a single to left and pinch runner Nick Meacham scored on a walk off base hit from Krebs.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Hansen posted three of Jewell's 10 hits, while Elias finished with two RBI.
- Smoot scored two runs for the Cardinals.
- Reed Pegram (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three earned over 2.2 innings of work.
FOR THE LIONS
- Alex Canty led all hitters with three base knocks while Krebs added two.
- Reliever Niko Marshall (1-0) got the win, tossing the final three innings, allowing a single earned run on three hits.
