Baseball Sweeps UMSL for First GLVC Wins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team swept both ends of a Friday doubleheader over the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons at the KC Urban Youth Academy. The wins move the Cardinals to 3-5 on the year and 2-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. 

GAME ONE
Jewell 9, UMSL 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals jumped on the board early, scoring two in the bottom of the first inning as Anthony Hansen tripled to score Jake Wilcox followed by an RBI groundout by Jade Smoot
  • UMSL scored their first run of the day in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Jacob Stoker. 
  • The Tritons put up four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. 
  • Jewell got two runs back in the bottom half of the frame on a double by Cole Conner and a Triton error. 
  • Jewell retook the lead for good in the seventh inning as Alex Epp blasted a three-run home run, his second of the season, to put the Cards back in front, 7-4. 
  • Smoot and Cameron Fliege each posted an RBI in the following inning to give Jewell some insurance. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell outhit the Tritons, 10-6, led by two each from Wilcox and Epp. 
  • Hanson and Drew Reed each scored two runs.  
  • Reed Pegram (1-1) got the win, tossing the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. 
     
FOR THE TRITONS
  • Matt DiMemmo had two hits for UMSL while Mitchell Spindler finished with three RBI. 
  • Jack Rhoades (1-2) took the loss, giving up two earned runs. 

GAME TWO
Jewell 6, UMSL 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMSL scored first in the nightcap with a run in the top of the second but the Cardinals quickly tied things up on an RBI double down the left field line by Reed. 
  • Jewell added two runs in the following frame, as a throwing error allowed Wilcox to score followed by an RBI single off the bat of Cody Lampe
  • Fliege doubled allowing Hansen to score in the fourth to extend the lead to three. 
  • Jewell added two more in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch and groundout. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Wilcox led the way with three hits while Lampe and Reed had two. 
  • Epp and Hansen scored two runs. 
  • Shane Cavallo (1-0) earned the win with a four hit complete game while striking out seven. 

FOR THE TRITONS
  • Carson Holin had two of the Triton's four hits. 
  • Nick Torres (0-3) suffered the loss allowing four earned runs on six hits over five frames. 

UP NEXT
Jewell and UMSL will complete their series on Saturday at noon at the KC Urban Youth Academy complex.
