KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team rallied from down three runs late in game one to win in walk off fashion and split a doubleheader with Missouri-St. Louis. The Cardinals, who won three of four in the series, are now 4-6 overall and 3-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
GAME ONE
Jewell 9, UMSL 8
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After UMSL scored two early runs, the Cardinals plated five on five hits in the third. After Chase Elias was hit by a pitch, Jake Wilcox tripled to right center to put Jewell on the board. Four doubles, including three straight by Anthony Hansen, Cameron Fliege and Jade Smoot, scored four more and put the Cards on top 5-2.
- UMSL put together their own big inning in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on just two hits, with a grand slam by Bryce Kulinski to take an 8-5 lead.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Jewell got back-to-back up the middle by Smoot and Nick Modrcin pulled the Cardinals within one.
- Down to their last opportunity, Fliege led off with an infield single. Quincy Aldrich on to run, the junior advanced to third on consecutive wild pitches before scoring on a base hit by Modrcin to tie the game. After an intentional walk to Drew Reed to road the bases, Cole Conner put a pinch hit single through the left side to give Jewell the walk off win.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell pounded out a season-high 17 hits, led by three a piece from Wilcox, Hansen and Fliege. Wilcox was a home run shy of the cycle.
- Smoot had three RBI while Modrcin added two.
- Nyk Yaquab (1-1) got the win, throwing the final frame, giving up just a single hit.
FOR THE TRITONS
- UMSL had eight hits, including two a piece from Bryce Kulinski and Bryce Burton.
- Dan Flaiz took the loss, allowing two earned runs in the ninth.
GAME TWO
Jewell 9, UMSL 20
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMSL scored their first run in the top of the second inning before exploding for seven more in the third to take an early 8-0 lead.
- After the Tritons added three more in the fourth, Jewell got on the board after a two-run home run to right field off the bat of Smoot.
- UMSL scored two runs in the fifth, before the Cardinals plated three in the bottom half of the frame. Jewell got back-to-back pinch hit doubles by Arian Jimenez-Quezada and Connor Morehouse, followed by a single from Fliege.
- The Tritons scored five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
- In the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals scored three runs on RBI by Alex Epp and Conner.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Smoot led Jewell with three RBI, including his second home run of the season.
- The Cardinals had nine total hits, led by two from Fliege, Epp and Morehouse.
- Alex Schneider (0-2) took the loss, working 2.2 innings.
FOR THE TRITONS
- UMSL had 17 hits, with Jared Bryant, John Hilpert and Jacob Stoker with three each.
- Stoker scored four runs while Clayton Stephens had five RBI.
- Bobby Shallenberger (1-0) earned the win, tossing five frames, giving up five earned runs.
