ST. LOUIS, Mo. - After several close sets and matches over the last few weeks, the William Jewell volleyball team got over the hump on Saturday winning their first match of the year, 3-0, over Illinois Springfield. The Cardinals fell to No. 10 UMSL to wrap up the tri-match.
In the second match of the day with her third block, and eighth on the day, senior middle hitter
Elizabeth Quinn recorded career block No. 311 to become Jewell's NCAA era leader, surpassing Christina Pratt (2011-14).
GAME ONE
Jewell 3, UIS 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-22)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell got off to a bit of a slow start in the opener as UIS grabbed an early 11-6 lead. The Cardinals went on a 10-4 run, capped by a kill from Lily Johnson, to tie the set at 16. Trailing by one late, the Cardinals scored four of the final five points to take the first set, 25-23.
- In set two it was Jewell who grabbed the lead first, taking advantage of four Prairie Star errors and getting blocks from four different players to open up a 17-11 advantage. Leading by nine late, UIS went on a brief run, scoring five straight but a bad set gave Jewell the two set lead.
- UIS held a lead midway through set three, 17-14 but the Cardinals finished by outscoring the Stars 11-5 to win the final set 25-22 and earn their first win and first sweep of the year.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell hit .169 on the match, while holding their opponent to and .042 clip. Tori Vogt led the way with 10 kills.
- Quinn posted five blocks in the opening match as the Cardinals had nine team blocks, compared to just three by UIS.
- Harper Auman finished with a season-high 18 assists, while Haidan Baade had 15 digs and Jordan Collard 14.
FOR THE PRAIRIE STARS
- Megan Krasowski led the Stars with 10 kills.
- Becca Blakeley had 17 assists while Kenzie Hendon finished with 17 digs.
GAME TWO
Jewell 0, #10 UMSL 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Cardinals took an early 5-3 lead, UMSL used a 14-4 run to open up an eight point lead. After a kill by Maddie Wingert, Jewell got as close as 23-17 but back-to-back Triton kills gave UMSL the set.
- The Tritons led by as many as eight in the second set on the way to a 25-15 win.
- The Cardinals got off to a 5-2 start in the final set, led by three kills from Vogt. From there, the Tritons outscored Jewell 23-8 to take set three, 25-13.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Vogt led Jewell with seven kills while Auman had nine assists.
- Baade finished with a game-high 15 digs with Quinn adding three blocks.
FOR THE TRITONS
- Charlotte Richards had a match-high 10 kills handed out by Kaileen Herman who had 32 assists.
