SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team snapped a three game skid with a 13-5 win in game two at Drury on Saturday. The Cardinals, who move 5-8 overall and 4-7 in GLVC play, dropped game one, 12-2.
GAME ONE
Jewell 2, Drury 12
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drury jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings to break things open early.
- In the top of the fourth, Jade Smoot singled, and advanced to second and scored on a double by Nick Modrcin to put Jewell on the board.
- The Panthers added two more runs over the following two innings, before Cameron Fliege walked and crossed the plate on a sac fly off the bat of Alex Epp in the sixth.
- Drury scored three more in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to the final.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell was limited to just four hits, led by two from Smoot.
- Alex Schneider (0-3) suffered the loss, working three innings.
FOR THE PANTHERS
- Jackson Dierenfeld posted a game-high three hits while Nikko Calabro had four RBI for Drury.
- Kaleb Schmidt (1-1) got the win, allowin just one earned run over five frames.
GAME TWO
Jewell 13, Drury 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals scored early and often in game two, as Smoot walked and scored on an RBI groundout from Modrcin before Fliege came across on a wild pitch in the top of the first.
- Drury plated five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.
- Jewell pulled within one in the following inning after a base hit from Smoot and a bases loaded RBI walk by Fliege.
- Jake Wilcox ripped a two-RBI triple to add two more for the Cardinals before scoring himself on another base knock by Smoot.
- Another bases loaded walk, this time by Cole Conner, followed by a wild pitch, allowing Drew Reed to score made it a 9-5 Cardinal advantage.
- Modrcin and Smoot once again combined to score another run in the fifth. Wilcox sent his second triple of the game to the outfield in the sixth to score Ben Click and scored on a Fliege single.
- It was Wilcox again in the seventh who singled to score Conner and bring the score to the final of 13-5.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell posted 13 hits as Wilcox and Smoot each had three. Wilcox added four RBI and two runs.
- Click crossed the plate three times while Reed drew three walks.
- Shane Cavallo (2-0) got off to a shaky start, allowing five runs, but followed with four shutout frames, giving up just two hits during that time while striking out six.
FOR THE PANTHERS
- Drury had 10 hits in the nightcap, led by three by Calabro.
- Logan Pittman (0-1) took the loss, giving up three earned runs over 1.2 innings of work.
