Late Rally Not Enough as Cardinals Drop Series Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team put together a late-inning rally to tie things up but Drury scored in the bottom of the ninth to take the series finale by a final of 7-6. The Cardinals drop to 5-9 on the season, 4-8 in the GLVC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals took the early lead with a run in the top of the second inning as Drew Reed doubled and scored on an RBI base hit from Alex Epp. Drury immediately tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run.
  • The Panthers took the lead in the third inning, scoring on a Cardinal error. Drury then added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 5-1.
  • Jade Smoot was hit by a pitch before scoring on a Nick Modrcin RBI single. Reed grounded into a double play as Modrcin crossed the plate to pull Jewell within three.
  • In the top of the eighth, Modrcin and Cameron Fliege reached base, putting two on for Reed who doubled to deep left center, scoring both runners to tie the game. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Cole Conner scored Reed to give Jewell the lead for the first time since the second inning.
  • In the finale frame, the Panthers scored a run on two hits, including the walk off single by Caleb Engel.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Reed led the Cardinals with two hits, both doubles, to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Nyk Yaquab (1-3) suffered the loss, throwing the final inning of the game.

FOR THE PANTHERS
  • Nikko Calabro paced the Panthers with three hits and three runs scored.
  • Hinz (1-1) earned the win, striking out two in the ninth inning.
