CARDINAL NOTES
  • The Cardinals are coming off a tough weekend that saw them go 0-4 at the Drury Invitational.
  • Jewell has been solid up the middle of the infield this season as they currently lead the GLVC and rank eighth nationally with four double plays turned. The combination of Kenzie Stahl, Kelli McCallister, Sophia Lopez, Kenzie Jones and Abby Vandiver have all played at least one game at shortstop or second base.
  • Allison Rawls continued the hot start to her senior season last weekend, hitting .384 with two runs and two doubles. Over the third baseman is third in the GLVC with 11 hits thus far this year. Her .440 batting average is also 10th in the league entering the week.
  • Going deep in games as been a struggle for seemingly everyone this year as junior Kenzie Jones tossed her first complete game of the season last weekend against Upper Iowa and is only the third pitcher in the conference to have a complete game in 2021. Her seven strikeouts in that game, not only is a season high for Jewell but a career high for the junior right hander.
  • Sabrina Olmo has quietly been one of the more consistent players for Jewell through the first two weekends as the freshman is hitting .320 with eight starts, totaling eight hits including a double. As a team, Jewell is fifth in the conference with five stolen bases and Olmo accounts for three of those.
  • Aly Manhart enjoyed a strong weekend at the plate last week, hitting .400 with at least one hit in three of four games. She had an RBI double against Upper Iowa that gave Jewell an early 2-0 lead. On the season, the junior is hitting .333 with three RBI.
  • With so many new faces and new roles, Jewell has used eight different lineups and seven different combination of defensive placements through eight games. Thirteen different players have appeared in at least six games with nine having at least five starts, compared to last season when Jewell had only seven players appear in a defensive position in six of the first eight.
  • The pitching staff got better as the weekend went along last week, allowing only 12 combined hits with 13 strikeouts over the final two games while giving up just four runs in each of Saturday's contests. Jones went all six innings against Upper Iowa with seven punch outs while freshman Sammie Welt got her first career start against Midwestern State, striking out five.
  • Dustin Combs is now in his 15th season at the helm for the Cardinals. He entered the season needing 29 wins to reach No. 400 for his career and has led Jewell to 10 conference tournaments in the last 13 seasons.

ABOUT CENTRAL MISSOURI
  • Central Missouri opened 2021 with four straight wins at the Washburn Invitational last week, but dropped their final two to Mary and Sioux Falls.
  • Over six games, the Jennie pitching staff has allowed only 10 earned runs led by Kyleigh Lay and her 0.72 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 9.2 innings and a team-high three appearances.
  • As a team, UCM is first nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10.00, allowing only five walks this season over 42 innings.
  • Offensively, Abbey Fischer is hitting .412 with four RBI and two doubles. Two other players are hitting above .350 in Aubrie McRoberts (.364) and Ashlyn Cook (.353).
  • As a team, the Jennies hit .267 which is 11th in the MIAA with an on base percentage of .355.
  • Susan Anderson is in her 15th season with Central Missouri and owns more than 415 wins and is a three-time MIAA Coach of the Year
