FORT SCOTT, Kan. - The William Jewell baseball team split their opening weekend of the series as they dropped a 9-7 decision in extra innings to Bemidji State before winning 18-14 over St. Cloud State.
GAME ONE
Jewell 7, Bemidji State 9
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bemidji State broke the ice first in the opener on Saturday with a run in the top of the third but the Cardinals quickly rallied to tie the game on a RBI groundout by Jade Smoot to score Anthony Hansen.
- The Beavers broke things open in the fifth inning scoring five runs on two hits and two Cardinal errors.
- Jewell again responded, scoring seven runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, as Cameron Fliege doubled to score Alex Epp, followed by an RBI base hit off the bat of Nick Modrcin. A passed ball and two RBI single from Drew Reed scored three more to give the Cardinals their first lead, 7-6.
- Bemidji State tied things up with an unearned run in the top half of the seventh and the score remained knotted for the next three-plus innings.
- In the top of the 11th, BSU got a walk followed by a two-run home run to take the 9-7 win.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Fliege and Reed each posted two hits in the opener with Smoot drawing two walks.
- Seven different Cardinals scored runs and four accounted for the RBI, led by Reed's two.
- Nyk Yaquab (0-1) took the loss, allowing the two runs in the 11th.
- Alex Schneider tossed a solid 4.1 innings in relief, allowing just a single hit while striking out six.
FOR THE BEAVERS
- Tom Keohen and Brooks Bachmann finished with two hits for the Beavers while the former posted a game-high four RBI.
- Travis Carruth (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing only one walk over three frames.
GAME TWO
Jewell 18, St. Cloud State 14
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Cloud struck first with a run in the bottom of the first but the Cardinals followed with eight in the top of the second inning. Smoot led off with a solo home run and was followed by an RBI walk by Quincy Aldrich, a Hansen two RBI double and a Fliege three run bomb.
- Epp blasted his first career home run in the top of the third, a three-run shot, to extend the Cardinal lead to 11-1.
- The Huskie offense came to life in the bottom of the inning as they scored six runs on four hits and three errors to pull within four, 11-7.
- Jewell got two runs back on RBI base hits from Modrcin and Cole Conner.
- A two run home run from Steffensen again pulled St. Cloud back within four, 13-9.
- Fliege recorded a sac fly to score Hansen in the fifth, followed by Conner's first career long ball in the sixth to make it a 15-9 Jewell advantage.
- The Huskies did not go quietly, this time getting within two, scoring four runs on two hits in the bottom half of the sixth.
- In the eighth, Jewell added much needed insurance runs as Modrcin reached on an error and came around to score, followed by an RBI single through the right side from Epp to extend the lead to 17-13.
- St. Cloud got a run in the bottom of the frame but the Cardinals recovered that in the next half inning as Fliege sent his second homer of the game over the left field wall.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Epp and Fliege were superb for the Cardinals, each posting two hits, five RBI, and a home run, with Fliege blasting two long balls.
- Hansen had four base hits and scored twice while Modrcin and Conner also had three knocks.
- In total, Jewell posted 16 hits, including five home runs and two doubles.
- Mack Stephenson (1-0) got the win, going three innings in relief, striking out six.
- Reed Pegram (1) picked up the save, tossing the final three frames.
FOR THE HUSKIES
- St. Cloud finished with 12 hits, led by three players with two each.
- John Nett scored four runs while Jake Shusterich had four RBI.
- Mack Larson (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven earned on four hits over 1.1 innings.
UP NEXT
Jewell is scheduled to open Great Lakes Valley Conference action next weekend as they travel to Lindenwood. Baseball in the GLVC has made the switch to a three-day, four-game series. The Lions and Cardinals will meet on Friday at 6 p.m. in St. Charles.
