LIBERTY, Mo. - In their first home GLVC series in more than a year, the William Jewell baseball team fell by a final of 9-6 to Southwest Baptist, despite a furious ninth inning rally. The Cardinals drop to 5-11 on the season and 4-9 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats broke the ice in the top of the second, scoring an unearned run on a Cardinal error before plating three runs on three hits in the third frame.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals loaded the bases on two free passes and a single up the middle by Cody Lampe. Anthony Hansen then worked a walk to plate the first Jewell run.
- The Bearcats added another run in the sixth but Jewell again loaded the bases and used a free pass, this time a hit-by-pitch by Lampe, to cut the deficit to three.
- SBU scored twice more in the the seventh and again the eighth to make it a 9-2 lead late.
- After the first two batters of the ninth inning flied out, Jewell was down to their final change. A Bearcat error, followed by four straight singles, scored three runs and forced a pitching change by SBU. Cole Conner added another single up the middle to cut the lead to 9-6 but that was as close as the Cardinals could get.
