Baseball Drops Series Opener with Missouri S&T in Extras

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team went back-and-forth with Missouri S&T on Saturday, falling 7-6 in 10 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Miners wasted no time opening the scoring, as a leadoff triple followed by a ground-rule double led to a S&T run in the top of the first.
  • Anthony Hansen responded with a triple of his own before scoring on a single to right center by Cole Conner
  • S&T retook the lead in the second frame with an RBI single by Dakota Sill.
  • The Cardinals grabbed their first lead with three runs on three straight RBI by Conner, Jade Smoot and Nick Modrcin
  • The Miners got one run back in the fifth but Hansen and Conner again teamed up for a double followed by an RBI single to push the lead back to five.
  • S&T rallied late, scoring one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Connor Morehouse got things started with a pinch hit single through the left side. With Jack Lortz on to run, the Miners elected to intentionally walk Hansen and Conner made them pay with a sac fly to center and tie the game at six.
  • Sill led off the tenth with a triple and scord on the following play to give the Miners the lead once again.
  • In the bottom of the tenth Fliege and Ryan Dickerson singled to put the tying run on third base. A hit up the middle from Arian Jimenez-Quezada was cut down by a diving catch from the S&T shortstop ending the Jewell rally.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Conner finished 3-for-4 with four RBI with two stolen bases.
  • Smoot, Hansen and Jake Wilcox all had two hits apiece.
  • Jake MacDonald (1-2) suffered the loss, working two innings in relief.

FOR THE MINERS
  • Sill and Will Hayes posted three hits each, including each with a triple, to lead the Miners.
  • David Kephart (2-1) got the win for the Miners, striking out two.
