KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team split the opening two games with Truman State on Friday afternoon in downtown Kansas City. The Cardinals move to 8-13 on the year and 7-11 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
GAME ONE
Jewell 7, Truman 8
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell took the early lead in the opener as Jake Wilcox walked and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jade Smoot.
- Truman tied things up quickly with a solo home run to lead off the second inning.
- The Bulldogs plated three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth before adding three more in the sixth to open up a six-run lead.
- Wilcox recorded an RBI infield single in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Alex Epp before Jewell rallied in the seventh with four runs on four hits to pull within one.
- In the eighth, Anthony Hansen led off with a double to left center and came around to score on a fielder's choice to tie things up at seven.
- Down to their final out, Truman scored what would be the winning run on an RBI single by Justin Maloney.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Nick Modrcin finished with three hits, including a double, with four players had two.
- Smoot, Epp and Arian Jimenez-Quezada each posted two RBI.
- Thomas Hennelley (0-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
FOR THE BULLDOGS
- Kory Carter led Truman with three hits, including a home run, to go with three RBI and two runs.
- Connor McKenna (1-4) earned the win, working 6.2 innings with five strikeouts. Jack Owens picked up his first save.
GAME TWO
Jewell 6, Truman 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell again took the early lead in game two with a run in the top of the first. After a leadoff double down the left field line from Wilcox, Hansen singled to plate the first run.
- The Bulldogs tied the game in the third with a walk and stolen base followed by a single.
- The Cardinals responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back base hits by Cole Conner and Ben Click put two in scoring position with no outs. A sac fly followed by an RBI groundout, put Jewell back in front, 3-1.
- Truman pulled within one in the following inning but the Cardinals added much-needed insurance in the bottom of the sixth. A Smoot double followed by back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Conner who singled through the left side. Click put an infield single off the pitcher to plate another Cardinal run before Epp scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell totaled eight hits, led by two apiece from Conner and Click.
- Hansen had two RBI while Wilcox, Conner and Click each had one.
- Nyk Yaquab (2-3) got the win, giving up just five hits and striking out six over six innings.
FOR THE BULLDOGS
- Truman was held to five hits, all by different players. Kevin Donohue and Jake Schneider had one RBI each.
- Zachry Schneider (0-5) took the loss, allowing six earned runs over six hits.
UP NEXT
Jewell and Truman will be off on Saturday due to forecasted weather but will resume play on Sunday to wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
