COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The William Jewell volleyball team dropped two matches on day one of the Mountain Lion Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. The Cardinals move to 3-3 on the season.
Game 1: #15 Colorado Mines
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals fell into an early hole against the Orediggers and could not recover, falling 25-11.
- Jewell held an early 5-3 advantage in set two but Colorado Mines went on a 12-2 run midway through. Jewell got back within five late but another 6-0 spurt by the Orediggers gave them a 2-0 set lead.
- Much like the previous set, the Cardinals started strong but Mines got on a roll 16-4 run to break out to an insurmountable lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Orediggers hit .396 as a team, while holding Jewell to a .113 attack percentage.
- Katy Garrison finished with a game-high eight kills and three blocks.
Game 2: UC-Colorado Springs
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing by one midway through the first set, the Cardinals got an ace from Samantha Thompson followed by a Lily Johnson kill to go on top by two. The Mountain Lions rallied to retake the lead late but two kills from Anna Godfredsen and another from Johnson put Jewell in the winners colum first, 25-22.
- The Cardinals went on top 15-10 in set two before UCCS mounted a furious rally, to reach set point, 24-21. Jewell fended off three set points to tie things up at 24. Both teams traded set points before the Mountain Lions got back-to-back points to take set two, 29-27.
- The final two sets belonged to UCCS as they hit .482 over that span, while holding the Cardinals to a .159 clip.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals dominated the net with nine blocks, compared to just three by the Lions, led by Lily Johnson's six, tying her career-best.
- Johnson also Jewell with a career-high 13 kills.
- Thompson finished with a team-high 20 assists while Jordan Collard had 13 digs.

The Cardinals will finish the Mountain Lion Invitational on Saturday as they take on No. 4 Washburn followed by Lubbock Christian.
