Second Half Rally Comes Up Short Against Black Hills State

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team outscored Black Hills State 14-7 in the second half but miscues in key moments stopped the Cardinals short of a comeback, falling 31-21 in the home opener. Jewell drops to 0-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all Yellow Jackets early, as Jewell managed just 40 yards of total offense in the opening quarter. Black Hills State took a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
  • With seven minutes remaining in the first half, Anthony Pritzel found Jalik Jaggwe for eight yards, followed by the extra point from Josh Click, to put the Cardinals on the board.
  • Coming out of the break with renewed energy Jewell scored again midway through the third period on a five yard pass from Pritzel to Jesse Thomas but the Yellow Jackets responded immediately to go back in front by two scores.
  • In the fourth quarter, Livingston Benoit found his way into the end zone for the first time with a five yard run, as the Cardinals covered 78 yards on eight plays in just over two minutes.
  • The Cardinal defense made three straight stops in the fourth quarter, forcing the Yellow Jackets into three of their six punts. Jewell made things interesting down the stretch, as a 21-yard reception by Winston Quinn coupled with a pass interference call put the Cardinals in prime position, however, an interception in the end zone on the ensuing play ended the run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Pritzel led the Cardinals with 248 passing yards and 74 yards on the ground with two touchdowns.
  • Benoit, totaled 55 rushing yards on 20 carries while Jaggwe finished with 76 yards and a score on seven receptions.
