Cardinals Win Twice at Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. - The William Jewell volleyball team swept day two of the Washburn Invitational, with two wins over Colorado-Colorado Springs and Minot State, both by 3-1 scores. The wins move Jewell to 3-1 on the young season, their best start since 2011.

Game 1: Colorado-Colorado Springs
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS got off to a strong start, taking the opening set, 25-18, after hitting .357 and holding the Cardinals to a .206 clip.
  • In set two, Jewell was able to slow up the Mountain Lions, allowing just a 154 attack percentage in a set that had 13 ties and seven lead changes.
  • Set three was all Cardinals as they hit an impressive .600 as a team with 19 kills on 30 attempts with only one error to win 25-18.
  • Much like the day before, the Cardinals had to mount a comeback in fourth set and stave off a deciding fifth. Jewell won the finale 25-23 to win the match.

Game 2: Minot State
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opener against Minot State was a back-and-forth affair as neither team could gain separation. Tied at 17, the Cardinals finally went on a run, scoring eight of the final nine points, led by two kills from LaPorta to win 25-18.
  • Jewell jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the second set but the Beavers rallied, going on a 8-0 run to take the lead 17-14. The Cardinals went back in front late but two kills and a Jewell error gave Minot State the set.
  • The third set was another close one, as Jewell gained some seperation late. Tied at 16, the Cardinals got five kills from Johnson and Robison before Tatum Ernt capped it off to win 25-2.1
  • The finale saw the Cards burst out to a big lead only to then see Minot State rally once again and pull within one. Jewell outscored the Beavers 10-0 over the rest of the set as Kaci Behrens served nine straight points, including two aces.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
