LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team tied things up late in pursuit of their first conference win but fell just short, falling 61-54 to Southwest Baptist on Monday night in the Mabee Center. The loss drops the Cardinals to 1-13 on the season and 0-8 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell held a two-point lead much of the opening quarter as Kate Hillyer scored seven points in the first eight minutes. A steal and bucket from Faith Gilkey put the Bearcats back on top at the end of the first period, 16-15.
- SBU outscored the Cardinals 14-7 in the second quarter to open up an eight point advantage at the break, 30-22.
- In the third frame, the Bearcats maintain their lead through the third frame, but two free throws from Hillyer cut the deficit to five heading into the final 10 minutes.
- Jewell started the fourth quarter on a roll, tying the game at 47 after five quick points by Hillyer and a bucket from Skyler Boylan. The Bearcats took a quick lead, but a three by Katie Knock followed by an offensive rebound and put back by Hillyer knotted things up again at 52. SBU responded with a three by Leikyn Walker with just 65 seconds on the clock to go back on top for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hillyer led the Cardinals with a career-high 19 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. The freshman also grabbed four steals, two assists and a block.
- Knock added 11 points and dished out four assists.
