Cardinals Rally to Down Rockhurst to Open 2022

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team used a second half rally to defeat Rockhurst University by a final of 68-65. The Cardinals improve to 6-5 on the season, 2-1 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals jumped out to the early 9-4 lead after a triple by Kobe McKinley but Rockhurst responded to tie things up at 11. The Hawks stayed one step ahead for the remainder of the half, leading by five at the break, 36-31. 
  • Rockhurst opened the second on a 8-4 run to break open a nine point advantage with 16:38 to play.
  • The Cardinals chipped away, eventually tying the game on a three pointer by Jordan Jermain, four minutes later. Another triple, this time by Trey Shannon gave the Cardinals their first lead since the 15:30 mark of the first half. Grant Stubbs and Mason Alexander kept the three point parade going to make it a two-possession game. 
  • Rockhurst went back on top 61-59 with under four minutes to play but another Shannon three combined with four straight points by Jevaughn Ferguson put the Cards in front for good.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • McKinley paced four players in double figures with 16 while adding four rebounds and two blocks.
  • Alexander added 13 points while Tshiyoyo had 12 and seven rebounds. Shannon chipped in 11 points and a tied his career high with five assists. 
  • After Rockhurst shot a blistering 59% in the opening half, the Cardinals held the Hawks to just 29% in the second 20 minutes, including 1-for-9 from behind the three point line.

The Cardinals continue their four-game homestand on Thursday as they host Maryville at 7:30 p.m.
