LIBERTY, Mo. - After overcoming early shooting struggles, and despite being without the services of their leading scorer, the William Jewell men's basketball team defeated Quincy 81-77 on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals improve to 7-6 on the season, 3-2 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell held the Hawks scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the game but from there, Quincy went on a 12-1 run to go on top. The Hawks led for the next six minutes until Isaac Patterson hit a three from the deep corner to put the Cards back in front, 23-21.
- The freshman Patterson connected on a second triple just over 90 seconds later and helped lead a 17-10 run by Jewell to finish the half and take a 35-31 lead at the break.Â
- The Cardinals opened the second half hot, quickly expanding their lead to nine after threes from Jordan Jermain and John Zimmerman and a bucket from Grant Stubbs. Quincy cut the lead to one after a two free throws with under 12 minutes to play.Â
- Jewell maintained at least a two possession lead but much of the second half until the Hawks made a late push. The Hawks cut the Jewell lead to two with five seconds remaining but Jermain connected on two free throws to make it a four-point finale.Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jermain led the Cardinals with 20 points, three assists and two steals.Â
- Mason Alexander came off the bench to add 18 points on 6-of-12 from the floor and five rebounds.Â
- Stubbs chipped in 11 points and six boards while Trey Shannon had 10 points.Â
- The Cardinals won the battle on the glass, 35-33, led by Heri Tshiyoyo's 11.Â
