HAMMOND, Ind. - The William Jewell volleyball team opened the 14th annual Midwest Region Crossover on Friday afternoon with a three set victory over Lake Erie College. The win moves the Cardinals to 9-13 on the season, surpassing their win total from last year. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Trailing 11-9 in the early going, the Cardinals finished on a 16-7 run, led by five kills from Tatum Ernt to take the opener, 25-18. 
• Jewell used a 8-2 run midway through set two, aided by five Lake Erie errors to go in front 20-13. The Storm got back within four from kills from freshmen Belle Reynolds and Kendal Franklin ended the set, 25-18, in favor of the Cardinals. 
• Set three was all Cardinals as Jewell jumped out to a 21-10 lead behind three aces from the Thompson sisters. After three points from Lake Erie, the Cardinals closed the match on a kill from Bella LaPorta to win 25-13 in the finale.   

KEY STATS

• Ernt led the Cardinals with 12 kills on a .429 attack percentage while LaPorta added nine terminations to go with a team high 14 digs. 
• Samantha Thompson led the team with 19 assists while she, McKinzie Thompson and Drew Baxter each had two aces. 
• Jewell held Lake Erie to a .011 attack percentage on the day, their second lowest total by an opponent this season.

Jewell will return to action at the crossover on Saturday, taking on Lake Superior State and Malone University.
