HAMMOND, Ind. - The William Jewell volleyball team extended their win streak to three matches on Saturday, defeating Lake Superior in four sets before sweeping Malone University. The wins move the Cardinals to 11-13 on the season, their most wins since 2019.
vs. Lake Superior
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With the early morning start, it took the Cardinals a bit to get on a roll. Trailing 17-15 late in set one, Jewell went on a 7-2 run to go on top 22-19 after a kill from Alex Dvorak. The Lakers got back within one but Dvorak ended things with another kill and a block.
- Lake Superior rallied in set two to finish on a 4-0 run and win 25-21 to tie the match.
- The Cardinals jumped out on top in a big way in set three, scoring the first seven points behind two aces from Samantha Thompson. The Lakers chipped away and pulled within two late but Jewell was the recipient of four Lake Superior errors to win 25-21.
- Trailing 13-12 midway through set four, the Cardinals went on a run behind Drew Baxter's serve, winning the next seven points. Jewell ended things in a big way with a block from Tatum Ernt and Anna Godfredsen to win 25-18 and 3-1.
KEY STATS
- The Cardinals posted 10 service aces, all coming from the setters as Thompson posted set an NCAA era four set match record with six while Baxter added four.
- Bella LaPorta posted another double-double with 13 kills and a team high 18 digs. Thompson also had a double-double with 15 digs and 17 assists.
- Dvorak finished with a match high seven blocks with Godfredsen and Ernt chipped in five apiece.
vs. Malone
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After grabbing a 20-16 lead late in the opener, the Cardinals saw Malone go on a 7-3 run to tie the set at 23-all. A Pioneer error combined with an ace from Belle Reynolds gave Jewell the opener, 25-23.
- The Cardinals built a 17-10 advantage in set two but a 7-0 run by Malone tied things up and forced a timeout from Carolyn Beck. From there, Jewell finished strong with two kills from Godfredsen and LaPorta to take the set 25-22.
- The finale was all Cardinals, leading six after a 7-0 run, aided by three MU miscues. Two kills by Dvorak late in the set gave Jewell the 25-18 win and the sweep.
KEY STATS
- Godfredsen led a well-balanced offense with 13 kills while three others added at least seven.
- Thompson dished out 15 assists while Baxter chipped in 13.
- Dvorak finished with a team high two aces and four blocks to bring her season total to 95, the most by a freshman in the NCAA era.
