Big Performances Lead Jewell to 3-1 Win Over Illinois Springfield

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team got multiple standout individual performances on Friday night to down Illinois Springfield in four sets. The Cardinals move to 12-13 on the season and 2-7 in the GLVC, matching their highest win total since 2012.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell opened strong, hitting .364 in the first set and building a 14-10 lead early. After the Stars got back within one, the Cardinals used a 9-4 run highlighted by four kills from Bella LaPorta to take the opener 25-19.
  • The Cardinals struggled to find a rhythm in set two, falling behind 24-15. Three kills and an error from UIS held off set point four times before the Stars closed it on a kill by Eirini Glynou, 25-19.
  • Set three was full of multiple runs by both teams. Leading 17-16, the Cardinals got two kills from LaPorta and a block by Alex Dvorak to go in front by four. Three straight kills from three different Cardinals closed the set 25-19 and put Jewell on top.
  • A 7-1 run midway through set four behind two kills each from LaPorta, Katie Paine and Tatum Ernt pushed Jewell out in front 20-14. UIS made things interesting down the stretch, pulling within one before two kills from Dvorak and a Star error finished it off 25-21.

KEY STATS
  • LaPorta put together 20 kills and 20 digs, for the first 20-20 performance by a Cardinal since Stefanie Richterkessing's on November 10, 2017 against Drury.
  • Haidan Baade had a season high 33 digs, second most by a Cardinal in a four set match.
  • Paine collected a career high 14 kills while Anna Godfredsen had 10.
  • Drew Baxter posted four aces and a team high 25 assists while Dvorak put up nine blocks.
