LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team suffered a 63-32 setback to Michigan Tech in the season opener on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Michigan Tech took an early lead in the first quarter but a layup from Emree Zars cut the deficit to six. The Huskies finished the opening frame on a 12-2 run to hold a 25-9 lead after 10 minutes. 
• Jewell went on a 6-0 run, sparked by a triple from Chloe Frank, to pull back within 16, but trailed 37-19 at the intermission. 
• The Huskies extended their lead to as many as 33 late in the second half, on their way to the win. 

KEY STATS

• Newcomers led the Cardinals as Zars was tops with nine points while adding five boards. 
• Frank pulled down a team high six rebounds.
