Cardinals Hold Off Arkansas Tech to Open Drury Thanksgiving Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team snapped a three game skid on Tuesday with a 90-85 win over Arkansas Tech in the opening game of the Drury Thanksgiving Classic. The victory moves the Cardinals to 2-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took a bit to get in a rhythm, committing three early turnovers, but kept pace with the Wonder Boys. Midway through the first half, Jordan Jermain hit a three that sparked a 15-5 run to go from down one to up eight.
  • With under four minutes to go in the opening period, the Cardinals used a 12-5 run, capped by another triple from Jermain to push their lead to a dozen. However, Arkansas Tech finished the half on a 6-0 spurt of their own to make it 48-42 at the break.
  • The Cardinals started the second 20 minutes strong, immediately pushing their lead to 13, the largest of the day after threes from Jermain and Mason Alexander and a bucket from Kobe McKinley. Arkansas Tech followed with a 12-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes to cut the lead down to just three, 60-57.
  • Jewell was able to push the advantage back to double digits and led by 10 with just over two minutes to play, but things got tough down the stretch. The Wonder Boys scored 13 points over the final two minutes to pull within one possession but Jermain and Eli Wingert converted four late free throws to secure the win.

KEY STATS
  • Jermain finished with 23 points while Alexander added 20 on 6-of-11 from long range. Both also handed out three assists.
  • McKinley added 17 points with Trey Shannon scoring a season high 15 on 3-of-4 from three.
  • Heri Tshiyoyo pulled down a game high 10 rebounds.
  • The Cardinals shot 52% from the field and 54% from three.
  • Jewell out-rebounded the Wonder Boys 37-30, including 12 offensive boards which led to 16 points.
