LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell men's basketball team held a second half lead on Saturday but couldn't overcome cold shooting, dropping a 59-51 decision to Maryville in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. The Cardinals fall to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening 10 minutes of action were back-and-forth with Maryville holding the largest lead at 17-12.
- From there, the Cardinals went on a 14-2 run, capped by three consecutive triples from Mason Alexander and Grant Stubbs to go on top 26-19. Jewell pushed the lead to double digits after a bucket from Jordan Jermain but a layup at the buzzer made it a 33-25 game at the break.
- A jump shot in the paint from Heri Tshiyoyo three minutes into the second half, expanded the Cardinal lead back to 10 but Maryville caught fire and went on a 26-7 run to go back in front 51-42.
- Jewell made a late push behind a three from Jermain and another bucket from Tshiyoyo to get back within five but could get no closer.
