Dominant Second Half Leads Cardinals to Win over McKendree

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team posted a dominant second half to defeat McKendree University 77-55 on Monday night. The Cardinals improve to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McKendree got off to a fast start, taking an early 9-2 lead, but the Cardinals quickly responded with a 12-3 run after a three from Mason Alexander to go on top by two. The remainder of the second half went back and forth with four lead changes and three ties over the remaining 12 minutes of the opening period to go to the locker room, knotted at 35-all.
  • The first four minutes of the second half continued much like the first, until the Cardinals caught fire, going on a 19-2 run, sparked by 10 consecutive points from Isaac Patterson, to go from down one to up 16 in a span of eight minutes. Jewell continued to pour it on, expanding their lead to as many as 22 after a layup from Kobe McKinley

KEY STATS
  • Five players finished in double figures, led by Jordan Jermain with 15.
  • Mason Alexander posted 14 points on 4-of-8 from three point land while Heri Tshiyoyo collected another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. 
  • McKinley finished with 13 points while Patterson scored a career high 10. 
  • Jewell shot 46% in the second half while holding the Bearcats to a 25% clip. 
  • The Cardinals dominated the paint, outscoring McKendree 42-20 and grabbing a season high 18 offensive rebounds leading the 20 second chance points.  

UP NEXT
The Cardinals continue GLVC play this weekend with a trip to Indianapolis on Thursday evening followed by a stop at Lewis on Saturday afternoon.
