Women's Basketball Travels to Alaska for Weekend Series

12/6/2022 1:23:00 PM

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team continues their December road swing this week with a stop at Lincoln University of Missouri before boarding a plane for two games in Anchorage, Alaska.

THE SERIES
The Cardinals are 3-1 against Lincoln University in the NCAA era, suffering their first lost last winter after winning three straight. Despite the distance between the schools, this is not the first meeting between Jewell and the Seawolves as Alaska Anchorage downed the Cardinals 90-63 at the CCA Division II Tip Off Classic back in 2015.

CARDINAL NOTES

  • With a young team, Jewell is making adjustments to find their way offensively, however, on the defensive end, they continue to be a traditional Jill Slominski team. The Cardinals are allowing opponents 68 points per game, eighth in the GLVC, but are second in three point field goal defense at just 28.4% and fifth in field goal percentage defense (40.7%) while pulling down nearly 27 defensive boards per night, third most in the league.
  • Emree Zars put up another big game on the glass on Saturday at Lewis, pulling down a game high 14 rebounds. The freshman is one of only three players in the GLVC to boast at least three double-doubles and four, 10-plus rebound performances this season, with the other two players being fifth year seniors. On the season, she enters the week ranked fourth in the league with 7.9 rebounds per game.
  • Freshman Ayden Shannon had moved into the point guard role rather seamlessly in her first season. The rookie is currently ninth in the GLVC with a 2.10 assist-to-turnover ratio while averaging a team best 2.3 helpers per game.
  • Jewell has shown its length in the early part of the season, coming into the week ranked fifth in the conference with more than two blocked shots per game. Rachel Senn leads the way with seven total rejections while Chloe Frank has five and Abigail Jones three. In total, six different players have at least two blocks.
  • Kate Hillyer went on a tear from behind the three point line last week, going 9-for-19 (47%) with a career high five against Indianapolis. The sophomore is leading the Cardinals with an average of 9.1 points per game, shooting better than 42% from both the field and three point land.
  • The Seawolves comes into the week ranked No. 17 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. This will be the first ranked opponent of the season for the Cardinals who last defeated a ranked foe in February 2021 in a 70-58 win over then-No. 23 Southern Indiana.
