CARDINAL NOTES
- Jewell is coming off an 0-3 opening weekend that saw them hold leads in each game, before opponents put up late rallies.
- Freshman Sydney Cure led the offense, hitting .500 on the weekend which included a double and two RBI. Abby Vandiver also hit .500 going 3-for-6 with a run scored.
- Ella Hoffman, another newcomer, put up a team high three RBI, all on one swing with a pinch hit home run against Missouri Western for the first Cardinal long ball of the year.
- Kenzie Jones started two of three games, working 13.2 innings with a 4.10 ERA. Aliyah Santiago got her first career start against Southeastern Oklahoma, striking out seven.
- Jewell is 14-9 combined against their five opponents, with most of those wins coming against former GLVC foe Wisconsin Parkside.
- Dustin Combs begins his 16th season with the Cardinals, chasing win No. 400 for his career and a return to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2018.
ABOUT GRAND VALLEY STATE
- Grand Valley has not yet played this season but comes into the week at No. 9 and coming off an appearance at the Division II Women's College World Series last spring where they finish fith.
- Two of the top three hitters return for the Lakers in redshirt junior Lydia Goble (.366) and sophomore Hannah Hollister (.356). The former posted 41 RBI, 13 doubles and seven home runs while the former drew a team high 20 walks.
- The primary starters in the circle are also back, led by Hannah Beatus who started 30 games in 2021. The redshirt junior posted a 1.33 ERA, 25-4 record and 205 strikeouts while tossing 11 shutouts.
- Dana Callihan begins her eighth season with the Lakers this spring and boasts an overall record of 261-80 with four conference titles.
ABOUT PURDUE NORTHWEST
- Purdue Northwest also enters the week having not yet played and will take on four opponents before meeting the Cardinals on Saturday. The Pride went 17-26 last season and were picked sixth in the preseason GLIAC poll.
- Aubrey Shroyer was the only player to hit above .300 for PNW last year and is back after posting a .372 average with four home runs and 21 RBI.
- Maddison Roop is the top returning pitcher, going 1-3 over 13 appearances and seven starts with a 3.63 ERA.
- Tristan Zink is in her first season at Purdue Northwest after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton for four years.
ABOUT SAGINAW VALLEY
- Saginaw Valley is coming off a 29-17 season last spring and will face Upper Iowa in their opener on Thursday.
- Jackie Popko is a returning First Team All-GLIAC selection from a year ago after hitting .356 with four home runs, 19 RBI and 22 stolen bases.
- In the circle, Emily Depew also earn All-GLIAC First Team honors, making 22 appearances, going 10-4 with a 2.06 ERA.
- Christie Ambrosi, a native of nearby Overland Park, Kansas, enters her second season with Saginaw Valley and was a two-time All-American at UCLA, winning a national championship in 1999.
ABOUT PARKSIDE
- Former GLVC opponent Wisconsin Parkside comes into the weekend at 0-6 on the year, having played in the Music City Invitational in Smyrna, Tennessee last week.
- Through one week, two players, Taylor Delgado (.368) and Cassie Rurledge (.364) are hitting above .300 to lead the Rangers while Jadynn Powell sits just below at a .291 clip and a team high three runs.
- In the circle, the Rangers used only two pitchers last weekend as Tijanne Ross made five appearances and four starts, working 21.2 innings. Ross owns a 7.75 ERA and 16 strikeouts in the early going. Meanwhile, Kiley Akey went for 12.0 innings over four appearances and a 9.33 ERA.
- Defensively, Parkside committed eight errors in the first six games.
- Kristin Ortman is now in her fourth season with Parkside after a seven-year stint at Alverno College.
ABOUT WINONA STATE
- The only other opponent to have played yet this season, Winona State comes in at 4-2 with wins over Grand View, Pittsburg State and GLVC member Drury.
- As a team, the Warriors are hitting .283 led by Kayla Kerkman and Abbie Hlas at .429 and .412, respectively, while Marissa Mullen boasts a .333 average with a team best five runs and four RBI
- Liz Pautz started three games last weekend, going 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 42 strikeouts in just 21 innings.
- Greg Jones is in his 22nd season at Winona State and is one of the winningest coaches in Division II with a .749 win percentage.
