Cardinals to Open GLVC Play Monday

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team open their GLVC schedule with doubleheaders against Missouri S&T and Drury University. Originally scheduled for Friday-Saturday, due to expected cold temperatures and winter weather, both series have been pushed to Monday-Tuesday. The Cardinals will follow the GLVC twinbills with a non-conference matchup with Emporia State on Wednesday.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell is coming off a 1-3 weekend last week where they downed Northeastern State, 5-1, before falling to Nebraska-Kearney and No. 8 Rogers State twice. 
  • Abby Vandiver leads the Cardinals with a .353 average over 10 games played. The sophomore has also swiped three bases. 
  • Hailey Wall is tops on the team with five RBI and two doubles while Allison Rawls boasts a .333 average and team-high 11 hits. 
  • In the circle, senior Kenzie Jones owns both wins on the season, working 40.1 innings with a 3.30 ERA and 22 strikeouts. 
  • Dustin Combs begins his 16th season with the Cardinals, chasing win No. 400 for his career and a return to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2018. 
     
ABOUT MISSOURI S&T 
  • Missouri S&T enters the week at 6-8 on the season but have lost six straight. The Miners were picked 14th in the GLVC preseason poll.
  • Four players hit above .300 for S&T, led by Shannon Flowers (.364) and Elizabeth Viox (.360). The former leads the team with 15 RBI and two home runs while the latter has a team best 18 hits and 10 runs.  
  • In the circle, the Miners have used four arms, and are led by Charlye Rowland and Bryn Wooldridge with have each appeared in at least 34 innings with a 4.04 and 4.20 ERA, respectively.
  • Cathy Monroe is in her sixth season at Missouri S&T after an 11-year stint at Truman State as an assistant coach. 

ABOUT DRURY
  • Drury enters conference play at 12-7 on the season and have won eight of their last 10 games. 
  • Seven players hit above .300 for the Panthers, led by Gracie Thomas at .395. Lauren Beier leads the team with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored while hitting four home runs and is tops on the pitching staff with a 1.79 ERA. 
  • Kristina Bettis has already earned two GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors this season and boasts an 8-1 record with 104 strikeouts of 69 innings. 
  • Jerry Breaux is in his fifth year with the Panthers and has guided them back to the top of the GLVC, having been picked second in the 2022 preseason poll after a third place finish a year ago.      
     
ABOUT EMPORIA STATE
  • Emporia State currently sits at 11-9 and will open their conference season (MIAA) this weekend, hosting Central Oklahoma and Newman. 
  • As a team, the Hornets hit .292, led by Brittanie Shepherd's .435 clip with eight doubles and 15 RBI. Alexis Dial also hits .392 over 19 games with 12 runs and eight stolen bases. 
  • Sydney Righi and Harley Sturm are bot 3-2 on the season with seven appearances. Righi leads the staff with a 2.45 ERA over 34.1 innings. 
  • April Rosales is in her 10th season with Emporia State and holds an 150-149 overall record with one trip to the NCAA Tournament.
