MacDonald Sets NCAA Era Single Game Strikeout Record as Cardinals Sweep Parkside

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team won their fourth straight game with a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Parkside on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals got fireworks in both games with a walk off home run in game one before Jake MacDonald set the NCAA era single game strikeout record in the nightcap.

Game 1: Jewell 6, Parkside 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell trailed for much of the opener as Parkside took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals got one run back on a Cameron Fliege RBI double to right center, scoring Anthony Hansen
  • In the sixth, Fliege drew a bases loaded walk followed by a single from Alex Epp to tie things up at four apiece.
  • The Rangers plated a run in the top of the seventh to go back in front. Down to their final at bat, Jonah Sanford led off with a walk before Ryan Dickerson sent a two-run home run over the left field wall for the walk off win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hansen went 3-for-3 to lead the Cardinals while scoring two runs.
  • Dickerson and Fliege accounted for two RBI each.
  • Drew Dant (2-0) earned the win, working one inning after starter Reed Pegram went six strong with seven strikeouts.

Game 2: Jewell 8, Parkside 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Parkside got an early run in the top of the second to go on top but the Cardinals responded with two in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double from Jake Wilcox
  • Epp homered to straightaway center in the third before Dickerson put a double into left field, scoring two to put Jewell in front, 5-1.
  • The Cardinals continued their offensive onslaught with three more runs on three hits in the fourth frame to expand their lead to seven.
  • After six dominant innings from Jake MacDonald, the Rangers took advantage of a pitching change, scoring five runs on six hit in the sixth to get within 8-6. Parkside got three more hits in the eighth to plate an additional run but a ground out stranded two to preserve the one run Jewell win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Epp led the way with three hits, including his fourth home run of the year, while Wilcox and Chase Elias each had two.
  • Jake MacDonald (2-0) picked up his second win of the year after setting the William Jewell NCAA era single game record with 12 strikeouts, while allowing four hits and no walks.
  • Dant (3) got the save with four strikeouts over 2.2 innings.
