Cardinals Come from Behind to Sweep Newman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball won it's third in a row on Tuesday afternoon with a sweep of Newman University by finals of 6-3 and 8-5 in comeback fashion. The Cardinals move to 10-18 on the season with the win. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 6, Newman 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Newman took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first but Abby Vandiver singled up the middle to lead off the bottom half and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half. 
  • In the second, Sabrina Olmo and Vandiver sent consecutive RBI triple and double to right field to put the Cardinals on top. 
  • A Hailey Wall two-run home run in the third inning followed by an RBI bunt from Kolbee Kealoha pushed the lead to four.
  • The Jets got a solo home run in the sixth to bring the score to the final. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell posted 10 hits, led by three from Allison Rawls, including a double. 
  • Kenzie Jones (5-6) went the distance to earn the win, striking out four. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 8, Newman 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Jets jumped on top with a big second inning, scoring four runs on five hits and added another in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.  
  • Jewell got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back home runs from Ella Hoffman and Kealoha. 
  • In the sixth, the Cards took advantage of five hits and two Jet errors to plate six runs and go on top for the first time in the game. With two on Jones singled followed by a two-run double from Rawls to make it 7-5. Sydney Cure followed up with an RBI single to center, making it a three-run advantage. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals finished with 11 hits led by two apiece from Olmo, Rawls and Kenzie Stahl
  • Rawls and Kealoha had a team-high two RBI while the latter also scored twice. 
  • Aliyah Santiago (4-5) earned the win with 5.1 innings in relief with seven strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals are on the road this weekend with doubleheaders at No. 5 Indianapolis along with Southern Indiana.
