Softball Looks to Carry Momentum into Key GLVC Weekend

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team looks to ride their recent momentum into a tough weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference action. After winning three straight, the Cardinals take on No. 5 Indianapolis on Saturday followed by Southern Indiana on Sunday.

  • Jewell enters the weekend at 10-18 on the season, 4-8 in conference play, and have won four of their last six. 
  • Abby Vandiver continues to lead the offense with a .369 average while Allison Rawls hits .354 with a team high 29 hits, five doubles and 20 runs. 
  • Hailey Wall and Ella Hoffman have combined for seven home runs and 26 RBI in the middle of the lineup. 
  • Aliyah Santiago got two wins last week to up her record to 4-5 with a team best 3.57 ERA. Kenzie Jones is 5-6 on the year with 41 strikeouts over 75.1 innings of work.  
  • Dustin Combs is in his 16th season with the Cardinals, chasing win No. 400 for his career and a return to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2018.  
     
ABOUT #5 INDIANAPOLIS 
  • The Greyhounds started the season on fire, winning 18 of their first 19 and are 24-4 on the year, 6-2 in the GLVC after splitting last weekend at Illinois Springfield and Quincy. 
  • UIndy leads the GLVC in most categories including batting average, doubles, shutouts and scoring. Four players are hitting over .400 on the season, led by Gianni Iannantone at .447 with 31 runs, 10 doubles and 19 RBI. 
  • In the circle, the Greyhounds have posted 13 shutouts with a team ERA of 1.25. Kenzee Smith and Haylie Foster are the primary arms for UIndy, boasting 117 and 64 strikeouts, respectively. 
  • Melissa Frost is in her 18th season at the helm of the Greyhound program and is a six-time GLVC Coach of the Year.  

ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA
  • Southern Indiana enters the weekend at 22-8 overall and a perfect 8-0 in conference play, riding a 10-game winning streak. This will be the final regularly scheduled soiree with USI as the Eagles are bound for NCAA Division I next year. 
  • The Screaming Eagles hit .349 as a team, second best in the GLVC, and are led by Katie Back's .438 average. Lexi Fair, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week follows close behind at .434 with a team high 40 hits, four home runs and 30 RBI. 
  • USI has used six arms in the circle this season, led by Hailey Gotshall and Josie Newman with 13 appearances each. The staff owns a 2.93 ERA and 170 strikeouts over 193.1 innings. 
  •  Sue Kunkle is in her 21st season with USI and has led the Eagles to five consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including the 2018 National Championship.
