Baseball Takes Two from Upper Iowa

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team opened a three-game series with Upper Iowa on Saturday by taking both games of a doubleheader. The Cardinals move to 6-2 on the season with 5-3 and 12-2 victories. 

Game One (Jewell 5, Upper Iowa 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got on the board early with a solo home run by Quincy Aldrich in the bottom of the second inning. 
  • Upper Iowa took the lead in the fourth with back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning. The Cardinals immediately responded with a two-run home run by Alex Epp to go back on top, 3-1. 
  • In the sixth, Jewell got two more as Anthony Hansen scored on a wild pitch followed by a passed ball, allowing Jonah Sanford to cross the plate. 
  • The Peacocks scored one run on a fielder's choice in their final at bat but Drew Dant finished things off with a fly out. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell was limited to just five hits, from five different players in the middle of the lineup but got three runs via the long ball. 
  • Jake MacDonald (1-0) got his first win of the season witha. 6.1 inning outing with four strikeouts. Dant earned his second save, tossing the final two 

Game Two (Jewell 12, Upper Iowa 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took an early lead with two runs in the first on an RBI groundout by Cole Conner and sacrifice from Epp. The Cardinals plated two more in the fourth as Conner blasted his first home run of the year. 
  • With the ground leading 5-1 in the fourth, Upper Iowa got on the board with a solo home run. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals blew things open with five runs on five hits, capped by a Chase Elias triple, scoring Ryan Dickerson and Kevin Witcher
  • Epp sent out his second long ball of the day to make it an 10-run advantage late in the game. Dickerson recorded an RBI single in the seventh to end the game early via the run-rule, 12-2. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell exploded for 14 hits in the nightcap, led by two each from Hansen, Conner, Dickerson, Elias and Jake Wilcox
  • Conner finished with a game high four RBI while Hansen scored three times. 
  • Jackson Bodinson earn the win, going all seven innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals and Peacocks wrap up their series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 p.m. at Fountain Bluff.
