Jewell Rallies for Another Split with Maryville

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After dropping the opening game of the day, 6-2, the William Jewell baseball team held off the Saints, 12-11 in the finale to move to 26-14 overall and 12-8 in the GLVC. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 2, Maryville 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two scoreless innings, Maryville took the early lead with two runs in the third. The Saints added four in the fifth to open up a six run advantage. 
  • Jewell got RBI base hits from Jake Wilcox and Cameron Fliege in the bottom of the seventh but it was too late as the rally came up short. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Wilcox led the Cardinals with two hits, one RBI and scored a run. 
  • Jake MacDonald (6-2) took the loss, allowing six earned over seven innings with eight strikeouts. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 12, Maryville 11
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started the series finale a little sloppy, committing three errors leading to two runs in the opening frame but the offense came back to plate three in the bottom of the second on a home run off the bat of Quincy Aldrich
  • The Saints followed with two runs but Jewell went back in front for good in the fifth, scoring five runs on a solo home run from Anthony Hansen and RBI hits by Cole Conner, Drew Reed and Will Brant
  • Lead 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Drew Reed led off with a solo home run to center followed by a two-run shot from Aldrich, his second of the game to push the advantage to six. 
  • Maryville made things interesting late, scoring five runs on six hits in the eighth but the Cardinals stranded the tying run on third base to finish out the win.    

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Reed posted three hits, including his first career home run, to go with three runs and two RBI. 
  • Aldrich enjoyed his first multi-home run game of his career with five RBI. 
  • Jackson Bodinson (5-1) earned his fifth win with a seven inning effort, striking out six. 
  • Drew Dant (8) earned the save, working the final two innings.
