Cardinals Fall on the Road at Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D. - The William Jewell football team fell into an early hole on Saturday and could not recover falling 38-19 at Black Hill State to drop to 0-2 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Cardinal defense broke up the first two passes of the game, Black Hills was able to connect on three straight including a 39-yard score to go on top early. The Yellow Jackets added an another touchdown late in the first quarter to lead 14-0. 
  • Paul Geelen put Jewell on the board at the start of the second quarter with a 31-yard field goal. BHSU kicked one of their own six minutes later before adding another score to push the lead to 21. 
  • Geelen added three more for the Cardinals with 28-yard field goal just before the half, to make it 24-6 at the break. 
  • Jewell opened the second half strong, driving 47 yards on eight plays ending in a Tabren Yates 11-yard run to the end zone, to cut the deficit in half. 
  • Black Hills State scored on two long rushing plays to extend their lead. The Cardinals added a final score late in the final frame as Taylor Eggers connected on a 15-yard pass to Winston Quinn to bring the score to the final.  

KEY STATS
  • Marquis Whitmire collected 50 yards on seven receptions with Quinn adding 37 yards and a touchdown on three catches.
  • Bart Harris connected on 13-of-27 passes for 94 yards while Eggers was 3-of-8 for 19 yards and a score.
  • Keaundre McCollough led the ground game with 60 yards on 18 carries. Yates added a touchdown on seven rushes and 24 yards. 
  • Defensively, Sean Mitchell finished with a team high seven tackles while Preston Snead had two tackles-for-loss and a forced fumble. 
  • Carson Anderson and Ethan Fuentes each picked up an interception.

The Cardinals continue their road swing next weekend at Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio.
